News Update - September 2008
We have just returned from travel and meetings into western Kenya. Last week we held 4 regional meetings, 3 meetings on one day in 3 different places and then one 2 day meeting in Eldoret. We were able to do this due to Murphy Matheny and Travis Matheny flying over and helping us out. On Wednesday we had over 800 leaders in the 3 different cities. The logistics were very challenging but we pulled it off, thanks to such a great team and staff. The next day we went to Eldoret where we had approximately 500 church leaders. This is the city where so much of the early violence took place after last December's election. Many of these pastors are still suffering from all the tribal clashes and unrest. Churches were burned, members chased away or moved and so many homes destroyed. Neighbors killed neighbors; destroying their homes and livestock. The recovery has been slow. We could feel the pain and struggles that these pastors were carrying. We wanted desperately to bring a word of healing and forgiveness with hope and faith. From the first session God began to give a true break through. The pastors began to pray for each other; repenting to those of a different tribe and acknowledging their need for one another. Within the first couple of hours healing started and the rest of the 2 days we watched hundreds of leaders receive encouragement and hope. For these pastors, having 3 ministers come to their city and spend 2 days loving on them was such a blessing. We began to see some joy return to their eyes. A healing balm has been poured onto some very open wounds. I know many of you were aware of the problems in Kenya over the last few months. You saw the pictures on CNN of the church in Eldoret that was burned with the children and women inside. However due to your support to Mission Barnabas, you were responsible for having representatives right in the heart of such destruction, speaking an encouraging and healing word. I felt that we were standing in your place and loving on these precious men and women. We were your hands extended and let me assure you that you got your money's worth this past week! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your investment. When you get to heaven expect a visit from several pastors from Eldoret thanking you for sending someone to them in a great hour of need.
Blessings, Ronnie and Debbie Matheny
